Azelle forks pizza at Hide and Seek MyGym music class

It’s autumn in Santa Barbara…

“How did you know?” Nazy asked. I haven’t seen any palm tree shed a single leaf..”

“Frond.”

“.. and nothing has changed color. The
sky is still blue.”

“And the
leaves are green and attached to the trees. But …”

“But?”

“But it is windy. We’ve had sundowner winds and even Santa Ana winds. I even noticed tree limbs ….”

“… and palm fronds..”

“ … blown down.”

I recently drove back to Santa Barbara from a lunch in Temecula, California. (Interested readers, especially those who consult a mapping app, will note that Temecula is not exactly ‘just around the corner’.) A few hours after I passed the 210 and the 118 freeways, fire broke out. We haven’t had fire problems here in Santa Barbara.

This weekend, Melika, Tom, Tiger and Arrow went to Mexico to relax and swim. Nazy and I spent the weekend with 14 month old Azelle. She is active, cheerful and engaging, so we focused on engaging her in cheery activities. Her favorite game is hide and seek. But..

“…. she hasn’t mastered the fundamentals.” Nazy noted. “If her eyes are hidden, she thinks she’s hidden.”

“Sort of like a Republican legislator ‘looking’ at ‘
presidential corruption.” I replied.

“She’s cuter than a typical Republican Congressman..”

“… and much smarter.” I concluded.

We had a lot of time with young Azelle, so, following the ‘Best Practices’ for grandparents, Nazy and I arranged several adventures.

Azelle really likes music and dancing, so we began taking her to
Yellowbird Music classes. She enjoys the class almost a much as Nazy and I enjoy sharing the time with her. And, since Melika, Tom and the boys were away, Azelle used Arrow’s slot at MyGym. She isn’t quite as dexterous as Arrow, but she is very adventurous. She especially liked running around, playing on the swing, zooming through the maze and climbing up the slide. She was the youngest in the class.

In deference ot Nazy, we shunned the traditional stop at the Donut Shoppe, so Azelle performed after a donut(hole)-free breakfast. She was happy. I was bummed.

The next day, Nazy and I took Azelle to MOXI — the local children’s museum.

MOXI is a highly favored venue for Tiger and Arrow. I thought that Azelle might be a little young for the trip. I was wrong. She especially liked …

“And what exactly do we call this exhibit?” I asked.

“I don’t know,” Nazy replied helpfully.

“It’s a transparent maze constructed of tubes filled with pressurized air into which children place fur balls..

“fur balls?”

“bean balls?”

“hacky sacks?”

“Something like that, Nazy, The pressurized air sends them through the maze — which stretches to the ceiling (which is three stories high). Then, at the end, they are blown out and land back on the floor.”

“Well, I guess…”

“Azelle liked watching the sacks traverse the maze.” I concluded.

Azelle and Nazy had fun playing with the giant Lite-Brite exhibit on the second floor. She also liked the roof-top water exhibit — a complex structure of fountains, dams, and moving parts. Nazy, I noticed, was also having fun.

“I think that you’re a child at heart, my dear,” I observed.

“It’s been a while since I came to MOXI,” Nazy replied. “You usually go with the boys.”

“That’s true.” I said. “It’s much easier with you along.”

And,” I thought. “Azelle is less likely to run off than Tiger.

For TWL Nazy and Azelle

After MOXI, we walked to Rusty’s Pizza for lunch. Azelle likes pizza (and Nazy’s salad) and she really likes to do things herself…

“… and she doesn’t always do things the easy way,” I observed as Azelle tried to spear a green
pea from Nazy’s salad with a fork. “Wouldn’t it be easier for her to just pick them up with her hands?”

“Easier, Dan. Perhaps. But she wants to be a big girl.”

“Tiger used to..”

“… wait for me to feed him.”

Tiger, Arrow, Melika and Tom have all arrived safely from their trip to Mexico.
